Still holding on to their fourth place position, Menlo’s Chess Team is fighting hard to win first this year. The schools in their league include Branham, Gunn, Cupertino, Leigh, Lynbrook, Monta Vista, and Saratoga. Captain Ray Tung said, “Monta Vista and Lynbrook have had the best team for the past three years, so I expect them to get first and second respectively.” As a team, Menlo does not have any rivals becuase to Tung the teams are usually courteous to each other. So far Menlo has competed against Gunn, Monta Vista, and Lynbrook. Unfortunately, they had to forfeit their match to Monta Vista but expects to play them again soon.

The chess team season usually lasts for about seven weeks with weekly matches. During competitions, the winner is selected based on how many individual matches were won and lost. With the addition of senior Hannah Rubin, being the first girl to play on the chess team, Menlo expects to finish the season strong.

The chess club, being a separate entity from the team itself has gotten the school to become more excited about the chess boards being placed on the quad for everyone to enjoy.
