Senior running back and defensive end Charlie Roth had a standout performance against Carmel High School in an important game that had vital implications in determining a postseason berth. While the entire team played well to contribute to the 28-21 win for the Knights, Roth’s fantastic performance has earned him Athlete of the Week honors.
Defensively, Roth tallied six tackles (three for a loss) and a safety to help the Knights overcome two blocked extra points.
“[Roth] had a huge impact on stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback,” senior co-captain John Guiragossian said. “[Roth] did his job and made pivotal plays on the defensive side of the ball.”
In addition to his stellar defense, Roth’s offense output running the ball led the Knights to their victory. With the help of the offensive line consisting of seniors Guiragossian, Charlie Pinkus, Harrison Armsby and Carson Gampell and junior Roberto Alarcon, Roth gained 166 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Roth’s performance rushing the ball also helped set up quarterback Mackenzie Morehead to throw for 134 yards and a touchdown.
“[Roth] sparked the offense in clutch situations and he was consistently reliable in the face of adversity,” senior co-captain Antonio Lopez said. “[Roth] is the best athlete on the field at all times, and if he isn’t, he will work twice as hard as the other guy.”
Roth’s impact on offense and defense has earned him Athlete of the Week honors, and he will continue to hold an important role in the Knights’ game plans for the remainder of the season.
