I never thought I’d get to see Stephen Curry, arguably the NBA’s top point guard and Steve Nash, one of the NBA’s all-time great point guards, on the same team. No, we won’t get to see them sharing a backcourt this fall, as Nash retired from playing this past spring, but Nash and the Golden State Warriors are engaged in advanced talks for the former two-time MVP to become a part- time player development consultant for the team.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr worked closely with Nash when Nash played for the Phoenix Suns and ultimately persuaded him to join the Warriors as a mentor to their All-Star backcourt. Nash, plagued by injury in his final NBA seasons in Los Angeles, took on a similar role by working closely with young Los Angeles Lakers guards. Nash played under head coach Mike D’Antoni, orchestrator of the modern NBA offense, in both Phoenix and Los Angeles. D’Antoni’s offense centered around quick shots, spreading the floor, and forcing the opposing defenses to react quickly, all components of the Warriors championship winning offense. Nash excelled in this offense under D’Antoni and will undoubtedly bring his experienced offensive mindset to the Bay.
Nash has a unique approach to the game, in part because of his excellent court vision and versatile offensive skills. While the sharp shooting duo of Curry and Thompson don’t need much schooling from Nash in the scoring department, they could benefit from his 19 years of being an elite playmaker. Nash brings a fresh perspective to the NBA champs and will be able to uncover means of offensive production, specifically schemes and techniques that the players and coaching staff may not have visualized themselves. Furthermore, the relationship between fellow MVPs Curry and Nash has the potential to be very special. Curry has been drawing Nash comparisons since his college days at Davidson. Yes, the two have eerily similar games, but the trait where Curry resembles Nash the most is in his personality. Hailing from small schools, Curry and Nash had to work tirelessly to make their NBA dreams a reality. Both Curry and Nash’s modesty is refreshing and Nash will likely be able to work with Curry on further developing his leadership skills.
Get ready Warriors fans. It’s going to be a fun season.
