April Album Review

April+Album+Review

Check out what you missed this past month in the world of music.

By Kaitlyn Tom

Lukas Graham: Lukas Graham
Artists’ first albums are extremely important as it will help them establish their worth as artists. Lukas Graham’s new song “7 Years” has been a huge hit on the radio, and his first album is doing even better than his single.

Recommended: “Drunk in the Morning”
The slightly jazzy beginning of the trumps coupled with the sliding piano make this song the most catchy in the album. The call and repeat in the verses lead perfectly into the simple yet fun chorus. The most enjoyable part of the song is the laid back beat that the other songs lack.

Laura Gibson: Empire Builder
This artist is not as well-known, but her vocal talent and her ability to play multiple instruments make her stand out from the rest of the under-appreciated artists. Born in Oregon, Gibson has been making albums since 2006, but her most recent album displays Gibson’s humble roots and her love of a simple melody. “Vampire Weekend” lovers will enjoy some of her more upbeat songs, and “Birdy” fans will enjoy some of her slower songs.

Recommended: “The Last One”
This song has an appealing raw quality to it that makes it sound like it wasn’t even made in a studio. From the beginning sounds of a tambourine and a woodblock metronome, listeners will immediately feel drawn into the song. This song stands out not only from her album, but from the rest of the music industry that has become laden with over-produced and radio-edited songs.

Beyonce: Lemonade
After her album “Beyoncé” that came out 2 years ago, fans have been eagerly waiting for Beyonce’s new album to come out. “Lemonade” finally came out, and it is a visual album that is available on Tidal.

Recommended: “Freedom”
This upbeat empowering song is perfect with the church-esque organs in the background. The military drum beat also gives the song an extra Beyoncé-like flair.

The Lumineers: Cleopatra
Known for their folksy-rock songs, The Lumineers do not disappoint in this album. The album starts off with a song filled with strong beats and a catchy melody line, a trend that follows through in the rest of the album.

Recommended: “Ophelia”
The second song in the album, “Ophelia” is the most unique and best song in the album. The tambourines in the back combined with the drums are typical of the group, but the slightly minor tone of the melody combined with the piano that peeter in (at 0:31) make this song stand out.
