Singing club, started by seniors Tatum Tai and Georgia Anderson, is fun, welcoming, and growing in popularity. The two club founders used to sing and perform together in talent shows in elementary school.

Through creating Singing Club, Tai and Anderson aim to create a community among others who also share their same passion for singing their favorite tunes. “We were talking in bio last year and we really wanted to start singing together again and see if other people wanted to join us,” Tai said.

The club meets every Thursday at 12:15pm in the chorus room, and each session is relatively casual and relaxed. “A typical meeting involves everyone standing around the piano singing either songs that we are going to perform or songs just for fun,” Anderson said.

The club is very collaborative, with each member having an input in song choices and putting together harmonies. “Everyone is really talented in the group, and Georgia and I mostly just give them guidance on who should be in what group depending on their voice,” Tai said. The girls also love their supervisor, Karen Linford, upper school chorus teacher, and the support she provides. “She’s really helpful with giving us music if we ever don’t have the right chords online, or helping with harmonies and giving us opportunities to perform,” Tai said. The club recently performed Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” at a lunchtime concert. “It went really well,” Tai said. “In the past we’ve had a few complications, [but] this last one went pretty smoothly, and I think everyone had a lot of fun.”

The club not only accomplishes these short and sweet performances, but also is a friendly environment that constantly builds new friendships as different people show up to each meeting. “I like that it brings all different grades together and that everyone gets to meet people that they might not before,” Tai said. She cites the close-knit vibe of the club as one of its unique qualities. “We’re just connected and get to sing together, which is a lot of fun,” Tai said.

Anderson talks about the club being a positive space for people to turn to during the day. “Singing club is important to me because it provides an outlet for girls who maybe aren’t taking chorus as a class or who want to sing more pop or relevant songs,” Anderson said.

Especially during a busy school day, Tai boasts the club’s relaxed pace. “It’s a nice break from the stressful atmosphere of Menlo,” Tai said. “Its definitely a nice space to help destress everyone and it’s a lot of fun to meet.”

Looking forward, singing club hopes to expand their performance venues and spread the word. “I think one of our main goals is to maybe perform at bigger events like assembly or on the quad,” Tai said.
