For the first time since 1991, the girls varsity basketball team won the Northern California Division II Championship title and is heading to the state tournament.

The Knights were the top seed going into the Norcal DII tournament and coasted through their three games leading up to the championships. The girls blew past number-three-seeded Enterprise High School to win the Norcal DII championship at home on Tuesday, March 5.

The Knights took control early in the game, dominating the first quarter with a score of 16-4. In the second quarter, though they were not as strong as the first quarter, the team came out with a similar drive, scoring 11 points and ending the first half 27-14. Though the second half was closer, the Knights came out on top, scoring a total of 26 points in the last two quarters, compared to Enterprise’s 24 points, making the final score 53-38.

Sophomore Avery Lee led the team throughout the game, with a game high 19 points. “The NorCal game was super exciting and had a really great atmosphere. I am super proud of us, and I am looking forward to [the state tournament] because I think it will be a tough game, but we are up for the challenge,” Lee said. Along with Lee’s stellar performance, freshman Sharon Nejad had an extremely impressive game with 15 points, 13 rebounds and a block.

The last time Menlo’s girls varsity basketball team won the Norcal Championship game was 28 seasons ago, when the Knights won their third consecutive State Championship. With a season record of 25-5, the team is set to play for the state championship on Sat., March 9 at Gold 1 Center in Sacramento.
