Menlo’s varsity girls flag football team celebrated senior day with a 25-0 shutout against rival Sacred Heart. Before their last game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 25, Head Coach John Paye honored the team’s four graduating seniors: Melanie Lascarez, Paige Miller, Summer Young and Kylie Jones.
Freshman quarterback Ava Allen opened the scoring for the Knights with a rushing touchdown and found sophomore Sophie Housser for another score later in the half. With under two minutes left in the first half, Jones’ interception and return led to a Miller touchdown catch, giving Menlo a 19-0 halftime lead. The Knights would remain in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the game. Sophomore Maren Mulloy capped off the Knights offensive effort with a touchdown while the team’s defense continued to stifle Sacred Heart.
Senior day was bittersweet for Allen, but she was glad that the team got the win. “We are really going to miss our seniors,” Allen said. “They were the heart of this team.” As the first year of flag football wraps up, Paye is looking to continue building the new program. “I want [girls flag football] to be competitive, but also a good time,” he said.
