Menlo’s varsity baseball team celebrated senior day with a 5-4 victory over San Mateo on Tuesday, May 7, at Cartan Field. Before the game, the team honored its seven seniors — Ryan Schnell, Mikey McGrath, Jake Sonsini, Garrett Tran, Aidan Wong, Yasin Abdulkariem and Sohan Gaitonde.
Schnell started on the mound for the Knights and picked up the win going six innings and limiting the Bearcats to three runs. “I loved taking the mound on senior night,” Schnell said. “The team has meant a lot to me over these last 4 years and it was a great way to end it.”
In the third inning, Menlo jumped out to a lead. Sophomore Jack Freehill’s double brought sophomore Jackson Flanagan home to break the scoreless game. McGrath would expand the Knights’ lead to 3-0 with a two-run triple later in the inning.
Two days later, the team clinched a CCS playoff berth with an 8-6 win at San Mateo.
