Menlo’s varsity boys basketball team was defeated 67-58 by Sacred Heart Prep on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Similarly to the first matchup this season between the rivals, it was a back-and-forth game, powered by the school spirit from both sides. The game was heated, with fouls throughout by each team. By the end of the game, the Knights had converted 11 of 19 free throws.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Menlo managed to take a two-point lead. However, the Gators remained relentless on offense, overtaking Menlo 59-53. On the next possession, senior Aidan Stull hit a clutch three-point shot, cutting the lead to a one-possession game.
SHP would go on to close the game with a strong finish, including a block on a late Menlo layup. Junior Ethan Zhao was impressed with the team’s valiant effort. “We fought really hard. I think near the end we gave in a little bit, which is why they went on a run,” Zhao said. “But overall, I think the first three quarters especially, we played really hard.”
Zhao looks forward to a rematch next year, hoping to end his Menlo career with a statement win. “I think we were capable of winning this year, but it will fire me up a lot more for next year because I don’t want to graduate knowing that I’ve never beaten Sacred Heart Prep in my life,” Zhao said.
The loss continued an up-and-down season for Menlo, dropping back below .500 in West Bay Athletic League play with Central Coast Section playoffs approaching. The Knights will look to bounce back in their final week of regular season play next week.
