The boys baseball team rolled to a 14-1 victory over the Capuchino Mustangs Thursday afternoon in San Bruno. The fourth-seeded Knights defeated five seed Half Moon Bay on Wednesday while Capuchino upset top-seeded Carlmont High School. Menlo should have played a home game Thursday because it was the lower seeded team, but miscommunications between coaches and the PAL forced the Knights to travel to Capuchino. On top of the road trip, two captains were late to the game because of an AP test, forcing Menlo to start three sophomores in the infield. However, by the time the captains made it to the game, it was already 5-0 Menlo.
Sophomore Jared Lucian carried the Knights offense, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs. He doubled in the first and homered in the second, driving the ball deep over the leftfielder’s head both times. Fellow sophomores Rylan Pade and Carson Gampell also added to the offensive onslaught, with Pade doubling twice and Gampell going 2 for 4 in the win. Junior John Bergeson added a booming RBI double for the Knights, and they scored half of their fourteen runs in the seventh inning. Senior Wyatt Driscoll continued his superb season on the mound with his second consecutive complete game. Driscoll’s only blemish came when an errant pickoff throw led to an unearned run. Driscoll did not walk a batter and earned his seventh win of the season.
Menlo will play the third-seeded Menlo-Atherton Bears tomorrow at 4 p.m in Half Moon Bay for the PAL tournament championship. The Bears defeated Terra Nova in Thursday’s other semifinal. After Friday’s game, the Knights will await the unveiling of the CCS bracket this weekend. They earned an automatic bid to the tournament after defeating Half Moon Bay last Friday, so their season will not end with a loss tomorrow. However, the Knights will look to win the PAL by continuing their recent success.
