Menlo’s choral program put on its annual Broadway/Pops Concert Thursday night in the Creative Arts and Design Center. The concert featured the music of Steven Schwartz, a notorious composer of Broadway musicals. All three choirs performed hits like “Day by Day” from Godspell and “For Good” from Wicked. Junior Ali Myers and senior Abbey Schmitt also performed their own original songs, to the audience’s delight.
All three choirs were given more freedom to arrange their own music and pick more contemporary and popular songs. The chamber women sang a Maroon 5 medley, while the men sang a mashup of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” and Macklemore’s “And We Danced”. The men’s chorus performed “All of Me” by John Legend, while the women’s chorus sang Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts”.
Despite the concert directly following Student Achievement Night and several athletic events, it was a success. “I was really proud of everybody. It’s always hard to focus coming into [a concert from other events] and I thought people were very professional and did a good job,” chorus teacher Karen Linford said. The Creative Arts and Design Center was filled up thanks to many attendees of Student Achievement Night filing into the concert as soon as the awards ceremony ended. All in all, the concert illustrated another facet of Menlo students’ multitude of talent and was a beautiful send-off for many senior singers.
