Last Thursday, May 15, Menlo hosted Student Achievement Night to honor accomplished students in both academics, athletics, and the arts. Each department gave away a multitude of awards to honor students for their excellent work. In addition, the facility awarded a small group of seniors with “Senior Muses”, such as “The Leader,” “The Maker,” and the “The Doer.” These awards are meant to recognize seniors who have embodied everything that it means to be an exemplary Menlo student. Finally, seniors David Ball and Amanda McFarland received the Henry B. Melton Prize, which is awarded by the faculty to seniors who inspire the Menlo community by example.
After the awards were given, Upper School Director John Schafer, faculty member Lauren Lax, and alum Trevor Nibbi spoke to the audience. With speeches that emphasized taking risks, accepting failure, and examining what education means to the individual, the speakers used personal stories to share wisdom with all in attendance. “All of the speeches were very inspiring and informative, in particular it was great hearing from Trevor. I don’t think this event has had a young alum in the past, and it was a very solid addition to the program,” senior Jack Heneghan said. Although the event eliminated the display of student work that it had included in the past, the event celebrated the hard work of many students at Menlo.
