———

In this issue’s center spread, The Coat of Arms is discussing a topic that, while often discussed in a broader, societal context, extends fully to Menlo students as well. In the Menlo community, students and faculty have conversations through assemblies and advocacies about the LGBTQ+ community. In this spread, we hope to amplify their voices and tell their stories about what their experiences at Menlo have truly been like identifying as LGBTQ+.

Through this spread, CoA is trying to decrease the stigma surrounding sexuality at Menlo. Talking in terms of sexuality should not be a taboo topic surrounded by gossip, but rather something that is widely accepted. CoA hopes that by directly asking the LGBTQ+ community at Menlo about what their experiences have been like, we can diffuse some of the discomfort that there might be around these conversations.

In this package, you will read two personal profiles from Menlo’s student body. Both of these students identify as LGBTQ+, though one student has opted to remain anonymous. For their safety and comfort, CoA asks that their confidentiality will be respected and not discussed inappropriately. CoA is extremely grateful to the students who have agreed to share their stories.
