In a community-wide email Wednesday night, Head of School Than Healy announced that Athletic Director Earl Koberlein will retire at the end of the school year.
In his seven years at Menlo, Koberlein has overseen numerous changes to the school’s athletics program, including the establishment of the girls flag football team.
“I feel a deep sense of pride in how much we’ve accomplished together,” Koberlein wrote in a statement included in the email. “I’m excited to see how the program continues to grow, inspire, and shape future generations of Knights.”
Koberlein played basketball at Stanford University from 1982 to 1986 before returning to his alma mater in 1993 as the men’s basketball administrative assistant. He spent 25 years working at Stanford, eventually becoming senior associate athletics director, before joining Menlo to lead its athletic program in 2018.
Menlo will begin a search for an Athletic Director to replace Koberlien starting in the fall of 2026.
