Claiming their 19th CCS championship title, the Menlo boys’ tennis team defeated the Harker Eagles 5-2 Friday afternoon at Bay Club Courtside.
According to Knights head coach Francis Sargeant, Harker strategically mixed up, or stacked, their lineup. “[Harker] put a lot of their stronger players on paper into doubles. So all their doubles will be good, and one singles will be close. […] I guess they feel like they can’t win straight up,” Sargeant said.
Despite the tougher opponents in doubles, the Knights won two out of three doubles matches. “They [Harker] didn’t really have that chemistry,” freshman Elijah Chan said.
“The boys stepped up when they needed to. So really, really proud of them,” Sargeant said. The Knights look forward to defending their NorCal championship title on Friday and Saturday, May 22-23, at Broadstone Sports Club.
