Girls volleyball played a tough match against Menlo-Atherton High School on Friday, Sep. 12 and lost three games to none. After an amazing season last year that ended in the State Championship, the girls were hoping to start the year strong with a big win against a very good team. However, many of the starters from last season graduated and are currently playing in college. Therefore, this year’s team is very young with many underclassmen. With only two seniors, the girls varsity experience was tested against an M-A team that returned lots of key players from their squad last year.
The first set started off strong for the Knights, as they built up a 4-1 lead right off the bat. However, Menlo-Atherton won 10 straight points to put the game at 11-4, a deficit the Knights could not overcome. The second set went in MA’s favor as well, but the third set was where the Lady Knights played their best. The team hung in and battled before eventually giving way.
Although the team is young, the Knights should grow together and the talent, once accustomed to the varsity level, should pay off as the season progresses. Look for the Knights to rebound and strengthen up in non-league play.
