Homecoming themes garner positive reaction

The root word “Dom” has been chosen for all themes.

On Monday, Sept. 29, the Homecoming themes were announced with the root word “dom” during assembly by a Student Council video. Students are encouraged to dress up in their grade’s theme for the Homecoming football game and come in attire related to the senior theme for the following dance. The freshmen theme is fandom, the sophomore theme is domain and range, and the junior theme is hebdomad, which means groups of seven. The senior theme will be announced the day of Homecoming.

The freshmen theme garnered mixed reactions. “I don’t think it’s going to be that interesting or fun for us,” freshman Clark Saffron said. Freshman Caroline Douglass disagrees, saying that the freshmen theme allows for a wide range of dress up ideas. “They chose the right theme for us because it can go a lot of different ways […] you can go for boy bands or really big girl fandoms,” Douglass said.

Douglass is not only looking forward to the costume possibilities but also for the class bonding that will occur. “I am excited to see how our grade takes [on float building] and how we work together,” Douglass said.

The sophomore class has adopted a positive attitude towards their theme. With a unique theme to dress up for, many students are excited to take on the challenge. “Because we got a really different theme it would be cool if [our float and dance] works and [that we] make something awesome out of it,” sophomore Kenneth McNelly said.

Sophomore Claire McFarland thinks that the theme is very relevant to tenth grade curriculum. “It’s good because we’re learning about domain and range in math right now,” McFarland said.

The junior theme, like the freshmen theme, has elicited positive responses. “I like our theme, hebdomad, because even though it’s really hard it’s doable and it’s going to be really fun to find ways to apply that to our float and dance,” junior Erin Broderick said. Junior Kian Seddighnezhad agrees. “Our theme is pretty weird but we managed to get a good idea out of it,” Seddighnezhad said.

The reaction towards the themes for each grade has been vastly positive, and many students are willing to take on the challenge of assembling a clever costume from the difficult themes. As the homecoming date approaches, students are mostly looking forwards to the numerous festive and spirited activities that will occur.
