Committee has yet to reach decision on proposal about grades

Davis Rich | Co-News Editor

The committee of Upper School faculty and administrators responsible for deciding the outcome of a proposal to adjust first-semester freshmen grading did not accept nor reject the proposal at a meeting this past weekend, instead delaying the decision to a future meeting. The proposal would change first-semester freshman grades from an A-F scale to simply pass or fail. Upper School Director John Schafer expects the committee to come to a tentative decision by the next meeting in late October. According to Schafer, the committee is looking to explore alternative options before accepting any definite proposals. Menlo has asked colleges about the effects of changing first-semester freshman grades to pass or fail, but would need to run alternative proposals by colleges before approving and implementing anything.
