Menlo Sports Recap Week of 10/12

    By William Bleicher

    Girls Golf:
This week, the Knights posted two huge league wins that will prove to be important later on in the WBAL tournament. The Knights opened the week on October 12, against Sacred Heart Prep. After a tough three stroke loss earlier in the season against SHP, the Knights edged out the Gators in a 219-222 win. Sophomore Sophie Siminoff and senior Jessie Rong had outstanding performances, shooting 37’s to help lead the Knights to a very important win. On October 14, the Knights played Castilleja. Coming into the match, Castilleja was undefeated on the season and had a chance to clinch the league title. Led by junior Lauren Yang and senior Claire Wilson with 39’s, the Knights pulled off a 200-207 win. The Knights are currently in first place with an 8-2 record in league and 9-2 record overall.

    Football:
For the second year in a row, the Knights brought a homecoming victory to Menlo with a 35-20 win over Woodside High. Heading into the game, the Knights were already a little banged up. Senior running back and defensive end Charlie Roth was not 100% and played limited snaps, but the team picked up the slack. The Knight’s offense was working on all cylinders. Junior Charlie Ferguson was sensational at running back, posting 136 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns, and senior quarterback Mackenzie Morehead had a QB rating of 82.2 and went 16/26 for 200 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, the win was not without its setbacks. Senior co-captain, wide receiver, and linebacker Antonio Lopez II suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter, and Ferguson injured his hip as well. While Ferguson was able to return later, Lopez sat out for the majority of the game after his injury. A homecoming victory was not the only thing on the line for the Knights either, Woodside was an undefeated league opponent coming into the game, and this win will prove to be important later on in the season. On October 16, the Knights will play at Half Moon Bay, another undefeated league opponent, and hope to improve to 6-0 on the season.

    Girls Tennis:
With two more wins this week, the Knights improved their record to 12-1 on the season and 6-0 in league. On October 13, the Knights beat Harker 6-1 in their fifth league match of the season. One doubles Mia McConnell and Melissa Tran won 6-2, 6-4, and two singles Ashley Vielma won 6-1, 6-4 in the commanding win. On October 15, In their second match of the week, the Knights beat Crystal for the second time this season 7-0. In league play this season, the Knights have only lost two matches and are on pace to win their 30th league title. Up next, the Knights face Castilleja on October 20. The Knights already beat Castilleja 7-0 earlier this season and hope to replicate that score next week.
