Menlo’s varsity baseball team lost 9-8 against the Woodside Wildcats on Tuesday, March 26.

A grand slam by senior Garrett Tran and a sacrifice fly by senior Jake Sonsini in the top of the first inning gave the Knights an early five-run lead. By the end of the fourth, Woodside racked up three runs — one the result of an error — against senior pitcher Ryan Schnell.

Going into the fifth, Menlo was ahead 5-3. Hits by sophomore Jack Freehill, senior Mikey McGrath, Tran and sophomore Chuck Wynn brought in two more runs for the Knights. A triple in the top of the sixth by Freehill drove in junior Ben Salama, bringing the score to 8-3.

However, the Wildcats amassed four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ahead 8-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, Menlo brought in Sonsini to close the game. Although Woodside didn’t get a hit against Sonsini, four walks and a hit-by-pitch gave the Wildcats a walk-off 9-8 win.

Menlo will play against Woodside again on Thursday at home. The Knights’ league record is now 2-1.
