Menlo’s varsity girls soccer team defeated Notre Dame Belmont High School 3-1 on Thursday, January 15th. The Knights pulled out a must-win game to keep their CCS hopes alive. According to head coach Ross Ireland, the pressure reflects the overall difficulty of the season. “This is the deepest league I’ve coached in,” Ireland said.
Notre Dame scored first early in the first half, putting the Knights behind early. However, freshman Audrey Zhen equalized with two minutes left in the first half to send the game into halftime level.
Menlo came out strong in the second half, with junior Julie
t DeCherney scoring early off an assist from senior captain Krista Arreola. Shortly after, Arreola added a goal for herself off a breakaway, making the score 3-1. Senior goalkeeper Bianca Putanec made several key saves as Notre Dame created dangerous offensive plays, but the Knights held a dominant possession throughout the match.
“We knew coming into this game that it was going to be a hard and important match, and when we were scored on early, we flipped the switch and came out with three more goals to bring us the win,” sophomore Parker Sunwoo said.
