A guide to Instagram

Instagram accounts to follow based on user’s interests.

In the past three years, Instagram has taken over as the social media of choice, and for many is used more than Facebook. While the typical purpose is to share photos with friends, Instagram can be a great way to find inspiration in some of your interests. Here is a list of accounts of to follow based on specific interests that will surely bring more life to your feed.

Fashion: Fashion accounts, although generally geared towards girls, are great ways to be inspired through photos of street style in some of the coolest cities or outfits from fashion bloggers. Many designers also have their own accounts so you can also follow your favorite brands.

Travel: It is often said that traveling is the best way to learn about culture and gain experiences, but while most of us can’t travel too much, why not vicariously indulge in global beauty via these accounts and further prompt your wanderlust?

New York City: Whether you’ve been there or not, it’s hard to not be amazed at the expansiveness, exclecticism and glory of the concrete jungle. Between the skyscrapers, bridges, tourist spots and the park, NYC is, I think, the most photogenic city and these accounts definitely capture that.

Art: This category may not appeal to most, but for the artistically inclined, Instagram can be a great place to keep up with the art world, either by following museums and blogs such as these, or following artists themselves. It’s also an awesome way for you to share your own art yourself.

Music: While Instagram is an uncommon and hard medium to use to share music and playlists, many online music bloggers do have Instagram accounts to post pictures of live performances along with quick recaps. You can also generally find your favorite artists’ accounts where they may most new info about their whereabouts and work.

Funny: These accounts can easily brighten my day with their memes, screenshots and photos. They can be both wildly inappropriate but also super witty.

Animals: Who doesn’t love waking up to look on their phone and see adorable pictures of baby animals? My personal favorite is @toastmeetsworld, the @fatjewish’s (see above category) dog, with an extremely long tongue.

Food: These accounts can surely make my mouth water at times. The whole idea for food Instagrams was kick started about a year ago by @new_fork_city, a delectable account that shares photos of trendy and delicious restaurants in NYC. Since then, the trend has traveled quick and so many accounts have followed in their footsteps. While some of these simply post pictures of delicious, sugary food, others provide healthy recipes or ideas for cooking at home.

Photography: Some of these may overlap with the “nature” category, but nonetheless are awesome ways to admire the beauty one can capture with a camera, whether in nature, the city, or even outer space.
