In the first installment of the weekly movie review, we take a look at Archangel, a two-part action film available on Netflix instant stream. For all you James Bond fiends, especially those obsessed with the Daniel Craig era, Archangel brings your blond haired Briton back for another thriller.
This lesser known film was aired in 2005, one year before Craig’s debut in Casino Royale. Archangel, directed by Jon Jones, features a budding professor Fluke Kelso (Daniel Craig) who unearths a Soviet-era conspiracy in now current-day Russia. By far the most memorable, badass scene was towards the end when Prof. Kelso evades a Spetsnaz unit with Stalin’s son eliminating targets with a hunting rifle. There is something about Russian cabins and wilderness that invites violent firefights. Despite this, I still felt that the heir to Stalin’s USSR (Lev Prygunov) overdid the role of the Russian mountain man-socialist revolutionary hybrid. The caviar eating, moustached Cosak felt overly sentimental about the old era of Soviet dominance. This relatively poor performance was negated by Craig’s perfection, resulting in a Bourne-like Bong edgy elegance which is currently unsurpassed in modern cinema.
Special forces junkies, spy fans, sentimental Soviet loyalists, or anyone who seeks out clips of Daniel Craig shirtless will find this film worth their time. On the other hand, if you spend your hours playing Viva Piñata on Wii or are sentimental about making pizzas on Club Penguin – stay away. Characterizing myself as a mix of the first two, I enjoyed the film, giving it a 4.5/5.
